Home And Travel?

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.
– Marcel Proust

While I’ve captured travel thoughts in these pages for the last three years, I’ve always wondered how to capture home as a travel destination. The thoughts, the experiences, the learning, they all have a different pattern when I have just three days in a place, or a whole week, or seven weeks, or unlimited weekends to poke around.

Penang and Singapore have been home for the last three months, yet their novelty has made me feel like I’ve constantly been on the road. Every weekend, I pull out my map with the list of things I want to see and relish the fact that there is someplace new to go. I’m almost making peace with an eastern society sitting plush within a western infrastructure, and also with hearing three different languages hum around me (make it four if you count Singlish). Everyday is a surprise – either a rush of novelty, or a comfortable familiar day. It’s heady in a way that I haven’t experienced home in almost a decade.

While I figure out how I want capture the travel side of home, it’s time to ring in 2017, the Penang-Singapore way! Happy New Year, both the Roman and Chinese ones!
